MVHR COMMISSIONING | MEV TESTING | EXTRACT FAN TEST | PART F
To undertake the commissioning of an MVHR system it is important to understand how the installation has been completed, whether a design has been produced or air-flow rates calculated. Although most MVHR units will operate in a similar manner by extracting stale air from kitchens and bathrooms and supplying clean filtered air into living areas and bedrooms, there are various controls depending on which manufacturer or model has been installed.
HOW IS MVHR COMMISSIONED?
To commission an MVHR system it is required to measure and record the air flow rates in each room using an anenometer. Minimum ventilation rates as set out in the Part F Document of Building Regulations are required to be met. When we commission MVHR systems we ensure that these flow rates are met and that the whole system is balanced and working efficiently. We also check other items such as the condensing pipe, filters, the external vents and the pipework and installation in general. Once we have balanced, commissioned and recorded the flow rates of the MVHR system we will then provide a Part F Document which can be issued to Building Control.
HOW MUCH DOES MVHR COMMISSIONING COST?
It is difficult to advertise a fixed fee for MVHR commissioning as it depends on the size and location of the dwelling, the number of dwellings or MVHR units to commission as well as the manufacturer of the MVHR unit and the controls installed. We will always provide a fixed quotation and often we can give you a guide price over the telephone with just a few details.
For a quotation either:
Email us at nick@mvhr-commissioning.com with either floor plans or a design if available, otherwise a description of the size of house / number of rooms together with the manufacturer / model of MVHR unit.
Call us on 07999 987269 and with a brief chat we will be able to give you a guide price to commission your MVHR system.

HOW LONG DOES MVHR COMMISSIONING TAKE?
The time it takes to balance and commission an MVHR system can vary depending on the size and location of the unit and the dwelling. An average size house usually takes approximately 2 - 3 hours and if we are commissioning multiple units or flats / apartments then of course we are usually able to commission up to 6 - 8 units in a day. If we find any issues with the MVHR unit or the installation in general we will always try to fix any issues whilst we are on site. MVHR units are quite simple and as we have commissioned many different manufacturer's models we are experienced to usually get any unit operating correctly.
Types of MVHR ducting
There are three main types of ductwork used in the installation of MVHR systems and we are familiar with all of them.
Rigid plastic ducting - This can either be round or flat depending on the amount of room available for the installation and is usually installed in a branch system with junctions to each room location.
75mm semi-rigid ducting - This type of ducting is usually supplied on 50m rolls and connects into a manifold splitter then a single pipe will run to each room location.
Metal ducting - This ducting follows the same principle as the rigid plastic ducting by usually being installed in a branch system with junctions to each room location.

MVHR controls
The main purpose of an MVHR unit is to have constant air flow in the dwelling at a controlled low rate with the option to be able to put the system into boost mode. The switching between these modes can be controlled in a number of ways.
Central boost control - A switch or control panel located either near the MVHR unit or in a hallway or kitchen.
Connected to light fittings - As with a standard mechanical extract fan, the boost operation can be controlled by a light being switched on in the bathroom or kitchen.
Humidistats - These can be located in shower rooms and bathrooms as well as kitchens. They can also be combined with the options above.
Timer - The MVHR unit can sometimes be programmed to operate in boost mode for a period of time at a set time of day, usually in the morning when showers and bathrooms are being used then later in the evening when the kitchen is in operation.
